A Holistic Approach to Organizing: Use Your Senses to Spark Action
Clutter often builds up from postponed decisions — maybe an item doesn’t have a home, you’re unsure about keeping it, or it just hasn’t made it back to its proper place. Over time, these little delays add up, and you’re left wondering how to even begin the process of going through it.
If you need a way to jumpstart progress on clearing your clutter, I suggest you try engaging your senses. Here’s how:
Smell:
Clear stagnant energy by opening a window. Or use aromatherapy (oils/incense/candles) and try scents that can energize and focus you such as lemon, jasmine, lavender, or peppermint.
Taste:
Fuel your body before you begin. A light, healthy snack or refreshing drink keeps your energy steady.
See:
Take a photo of the space you want to tackle. Looking at it from a new perspective can help you identify what is standing out and what needs attention first.
Touch:
Dress comfortably and stretch a bit to wake up your brain. Another way to involve touch is to write down a short to-do list. Small tasks = more progress.
Hear:
Play music, a podcast, or an audiobook while you work. Need suggestions?
Try my Spotify Organizing Playlist. This mix will get you going and hopefully keep you energized to keep working on your project.
Healing Vibrations: features singing bowls plus a blissed out kitty cat and is perfect as focus music.
Gentle Whispering ASMR: there are so many ASMR artists that I love but Maria is the queen of them all. Her videos are so relaxing and perfect for projects that don’t need a lot of thought such as taking things to where they actually belong.
Want an even better option? Organize with a buddy — like me! Conversation and laughter make it easier to keep going.
Making your space feel better can start by simply making the process feel better. A little sensory support goes a long way.
