A Time and a Place: Organizing Attics, Basements & Garages
Unfortunately, on quite a few jobs, I’ve come across items that have been ruined because they were improperly stored. They may have come in contact with pests. Damaged by moisture and mold. Ruined by sun exposure or become brittle from years of being left in a place that got too hot and then too cold.
If you have items that you really care about and they are in the basement, attic or garage then, please make sure you either have it in a proper storage container or get it out of the space. If the item is sensitive to temperature fluctuation then make room for it somewhere else. Items such as glass ornaments made with delicate untempered glass, ceramic/porcelain figurines or china should not be in a Wisconsin attic and instruments and your photographs need to live where you live. Find a way to display them in your home or at least put them in a closet.
Working in these spaces can be unpleasant so finding the best time of year to do the work is imperative. For attics it can be spring or fall. Summers are a perfect time to work on garages and basements. And here are a few ideas for making work in those spaces more bearable:
Wear gloves
Wear a mask
Bring light into dark spaces
Bring in a fan for hot spaces
Have a ShopVac nearby and ready to use
Use a dehumidifier in your basement
And, If you don’t want to tackle your attic, basement or garage alone, I’m here to help!
