How to Stay Organized Using The M Word
In the organizing world, we like to define our processes through acronyms. A popular one is SPACE—Sort, Purge, Assign, Containerize, and Equalize. While, I like the first few words, I’ve always felt like “equalize” might have been a bit of a stretch. (Organizing is many things, but I’m not sure it’s a sound-mixing session.)
There’s also START—Sort, Throw, Appoint, Restrict, and Take Back Control. It begins strong, but “take back control” can feel a little vague. Control over what, exactly? The junk drawer? The laundry pile? Life itself?
The end of the acronym can’t be ignored. Because, once your space is organized, the process doesn’t end. We need another letter. We need M for Maintain. It’s not the flashy part of organizing, and it doesn’t come with a satisfying before-and-after photo, but it’s the most important step. And, it rarely gets the spotlight.
Maintaining a space means putting things back where they belong. It means gently shifting habits. It means continuing to make thoughtful decisions about what deserves a place in your home. Organizing is never “one and done.” It’s an ongoing rhythm, and maintenance is what keeps the momentum going.
Another important aspect of maintenance is being more intentional about what comes into your home. Shopping can easily become a default activity rather than a deliberate choice. And, your possessions often reflect shopping habits that may not have been questioned in a while. Another way that things come into the home is through family and friends. Once you’ve done a lot of work on restricting what comes into your home, you will feel more empowered to say “no” to things that others want to gift/give you that you really don’t want.
Small decisions to declutter, organize, and maintain your home matter. Acronyms don’t.
